In early January 2024, Dr. Gavin Bishop will join the Estes Park Health team as an orthopedic specialist. He will provide general orthopedic care as well as orthopedic surgeries at the hospital.

“With the surgeries I perform, I really like working with the patients and getting them back to health,” Dr. Bishop said. “I enjoy performing them all, but I particularly enjoy performing total hip replacements. I really like how quickly the patients get back to activities. The way we perform this surgery now really allows patients to get up and move right away.”

Dr. Bishop will also be performing surgeries on shoulders, knees, elbows, wrists, hands, feet, and ankles. Besides hip replacements, he is also trained in shoulder and knee replacements.

He is a big believer in both pre-surgical and post-surgical education, since these types of surgeries are a journey for patients, not just a one-day ordeal.

“I take the opportunity to teach and work as a partner with patients,” Dr. Bishop explained. “I spend a lot of time with patients, letting them know what their disease process is and helping them understand what the options are and how we can go forward from there.”

Dr. Bishop grew up in Colorado near Littleton. He also spent some of his youth in Northern California outside San Francisco. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of California San Diego. He attended medical school at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. And completed his orthopedic surgery residency program at the Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Mass. He completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at New England Baptist Hospital, also in Boston.

“I decided to become a doctor for a lot of reasons,” Dr. Bishop noted. “I didn’t know going into medical school what exact field that I wanted to go into. I was a bioengineer in college. I like the mechanics of the body. As I went through medical school, I enjoyed every rotation, but I really seemed to focus on orthopedics because of the patient care, the biomechanics of the body, and the ability to do what I could to help the body work better.”

Along with sports medicine and traditional orthopedic surgery, Dr. Bishop also has experience working with trauma patients and pediatric patients.

“I enjoy taking care of young athletes,” he stated. “So, I will be happy to take care of our kids as well.”

Dr. Bishop is coming to Estes Park Health from the Orthopedic Center of the Rockies in Longmont. Before that, he had a seven-year stint at Longs Peak Hospital, a UCHealth facility in Longmont.

“I am very excited about this opportunity at Estes Park Health,” Dr. Bishop emphasized. “The team here has a long history of taking excellent care of patients. I’ve lived nearby in Longmont and really enjoyed the environment in Estes Park.”

In his free time, Dr. Bishop enjoys seasonal outdoor activities like biking, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.

His family includes his wife, a 12-year-old son, and their dog which is a Bernedoodle named Eggsy.

“I will offer to the community excellent orthopedics near their home to they don’t feel they have to go elsewhere for their medical care,” he stressed.

Dr. Bishop is Board Certified in General Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
